Say It Plain

by Thomas Averill

Five songs of apology and affection, from the answering machine to a brother's wedding toast.

Tracks

  1. 1. Say It Plain Over the TeacupsI was wrong about the wedding, and I said so over the teacups. It took me two years to find the words and about four minutes to sing them.apology folk, confident folk-pop3:30
  2. 2. I Kept Your Message on the MachineThere's a little green light on the hall-stand phone, blinking in the gloom. I've never been able to delete that message.keepsake folk, tender singer-songwriter4:35
  3. 3. Calling From the Services, LoveA cold vending-machine cup, a lorry sighing on the hill, and my love at the other end of the line. It's the only upbeat song I've written in a car park.road folk, warm acoustic3:40
  4. 4. The Chairs Are Stacked, the Evening's LongThe last car's tail-lights found the lane and the glasses stand in rows. It's the quiet after a good party, which I like best.after-party folk, nostalgic indie folk3:40
  5. 5. My Brother, You Were Always the Louder OneMy brother, you were always the louder one. I wrote the toast, tight tie and shaky notes and all, and I meant every word.brotherly folk, toast ballad3:15

Liner notes

My newest little record, and the closest to a conversation I've made. A phone call from a motorway services, an old message I could never delete, and a speech for my brother that I've rewritten more times than I'd admit. We kept it all very close to the microphone. Say the thing you've been meaning to say.
