Open the Windows

by Wren Hallett

Six songs of spring windows, long waits, apologies over fences and returns, written once the cold had finally gone.

Tracks

  1. 1. Open the Windows, It's Warm at LastThe radiator's sighing but I'm not listening, because a square of yellow light has landed on the floor. It's the first warm day of the year, in a song.spring folk, bright acoustic3:19
  2. 2. You Said You'd Wait, and You DidI left in the autumn with a suitcase and a plan, and you waited, and I'll never get over it. I wrote it with a smile I couldn't wipe off.warm acoustic, romantic folk3:25
  3. 3. I'm Sorry About the Plum TreeI said a sharp thing at your fence over nothing, over branches, over rain. I took you a jar of plum jam the next day.neighbourly folk, confessional folk4:10
  4. 4. Pencilled in the Corner of a PostcardMy old teacher sent a card from Lisbon, a yellow tram on a tilted street. It's pinned above my table and the song lives under it.postcard folk, cosy acoustic3:17
  5. 5. Arrivals, Gate Four, Hold My SignCardboard sign in two cold hands, felt-tip letters a little bit slanted. I wrote this one at the arrivals gate waiting for someone I love.xinyao-tinged folk, hopeful ballad3:39
  6. 6. First Night Under a Different SkyThe train let me down at nine in a city I don't know, and the first night under a different sky was lovely and strange. I think I'll always remember it.xinyao-tinged folk, romantic folk3:39

Liner notes

After a winter of recording by the radiator, I opened the windows and everything changed. These songs are about waiting, forgiving and being forgiven, and one of them is an apology to a plum tree. I recorded them with the back door open and left the birds in.
