Small Hours Weather

by Kiri Vale

Two late-night sketches of a rainy Wellington, one outside under a pharmacy sign and one indoors along an empty corridor.

Tracks

  1. 1. Green Cross After MidnightI wrote this walking home after midnight, when the only thing open was the pharmacy and its green sign made the wet street look kind. I laid rain recordings under a slow piano and kept the vocal almost a whisper.ambient pop, bedroom chillhop, rainy piano3:08
  2. 2. Empty Halls, Soft FlashlightThis one is about the quiet of a building after everyone has gone home, just keys jangling and a flashlight beam on the floor. I recorded the room tone myself and let it sit right up against the vocal.bedroom pop, field recording, minimal piano5:38

Liner notes

I made these two in my flat in Wellington with the window cracked open so the rain could get onto the tape. The piano is barely touched and the vocals are sung close to the mic so they don't wake the neighbours. I never planned on anyone hearing them, so it still surprises me that they went out over the radio in the small hours. If you're up late, these are for you.
