Small Hours, Slow Light

by Wren Hallett

Ten songs for the small hours: nightlights, humming fridges, mix-tapes and radiators ticking toward morning.

Tracks

  1. 1. Small Hours, Small LightThis is the title song for a reason: the nightlight, a warm shoulder and a hushed little house. It's the one I'd sing to anyone who can't sleep.night folk, lullaby folk3:41
  2. 2. Quarter to Three and the Radiator TicksQuarter to three and the radiator ticks like a small clock counting out the night. I recorded it in one take, in the dark.night folk, hushed acoustic3:22
  3. 3. The Hum of the Fridge at MidnightThe house is asleep and the fridge hums low. I like to think it's the quietest song I've ever made, apart from the fridge.night folk, kitchen folk3:19
  4. 4. Side B Is for YouI found a cassette in your slanted hand beneath the stairs. Side B was for me, and I haven't stopped listening since.cassette folk, nostalgic ballad3:33
  5. 5. Everything I Couldn't Say Is on Track NineI never could say it across the room, so I sat with my scissors and my tape. Everything I couldn't say is on track nine.cassette folk, romantic folk3:49
  6. 6. Your Voice Comes Home Through the WireA voice that comes home through the wire, a little late and a little tired. I wrote it for someone who always rang after midnight.romantic folk, late-night ballad3:36
  7. 7. The Piano Through the Wall Went QuietEvery evening at six a few notes came through the wall, and then one day they stopped. I still listen for them.hushed folk, neighbourly folk3:27
  8. 8. Three in the Morning, You Sleep Like a BoatThe clock says three, the street is blue and you sleep like a boat. It's the gentlest song I know how to write.night folk, lullaby folk3:49
  9. 9. The Cinema Closes on SundayThe cinema closes on Sunday, and there's a banner over the door. I went to the last film on my own and wrote this on the walk home.wistful folk, dreamy folk4:10
  10. 10. The Taxi Home Was QuietThe music was too loud, my friends disappeared and the taxi home was the quietest part of the night. I was grateful for it.hushed folk, late-night ballad3:31

Liner notes

I'm a night person by accident, and this record is where I finally admitted it. Everything was recorded between midnight and four, close to the mic, sometimes with a blanket over my shoulders. There's a cassette in the drawer, a fridge humming in half the songs, and a nightlight that makes a small gold moon. It's the most layered thing I'd made, though it never got any louder.
