Porch Light Left On

by Thomas Averill

Neighbours, hotel corridors and lit windows: a record about leaving a light on for strangers.

Tracks

  1. 1. Room 214, Down the Long CorridorA long hotel corridor, forty doors, and a key card that had seen better days. I wrote it on the edge of the bed with the telly off.hotel-room folk, smooth singer-songwriter3:24
  2. 2. Saturday at the Barber's ChairA Saturday morning in the barber's chair with the radio on low. It's the most cheerful song I've ever written about a haircut.playful folk-pop, small-town folk2:46
  3. 3. Never Learned Your Name, Number SevenI never learned the name of the man in Number Seven, but I know his tomatoes. That's how most of us know each other.neighbourly folk, wistful acoustic3:33
  4. 4. Keep Your Window Open, Whoever You AreA late summer street gone quiet, with the lamps coming on one by one. I imagined singing it up to an open window.dreamy folk, evening folk4:40
  5. 5. Candles in the Cupboard, Everyone Come DownThe wind took the wires down and the whole street came out with candles. The best evening of that year, honestly.community folk, candlelit folk-pop3:54
  6. 6. Forty Words on the Back of a LighthouseA postcard with a lighthouse on it and forty words I've read a hundred times. The stamp was crooked, which I loved.postcard folk, gentle acoustic3:43
  7. 7. The Last Bell Rings Out SlowChairs on desks and the board wiped to a ghost. It's the one I still can't sing in a school.school-days folk, melancholy indie folk4:22
  8. 8. The Fuse Box Under the StairsThunder, a dark house and a fuse box under the stairs. It turned into a very comfortable song about being stuck together.cosy folk, warm singer-songwriter3:32
  9. 9. Her Handwriting in the MarginsA cookbook that falls open on the same page because her thumb had worn it there. I made a lot of soup after writing this.keepsake folk, cosy acoustic4:33
  10. 10. The Dawn Fare to Harbour StreetFive in the morning, a taxi waiting with its engine low. It's hopeful in the way early starts sometimes are.dawn folk, road acoustic2:49
  11. 11. The Woman Who Held the Door at Platform NineA woman held a door at Platform Nine and I made my train by a whisker. I've been trying to repay her for years.story-song, dreamy folk3:16
  12. 12. The Lamp in Number Fourteen Never Goes OutThere is a yellow lamp across my garden wall that never goes off. I decided it was keeping watch, and I was grateful.lamplight folk, dreamy singer-songwriter4:04

Liner notes

I was travelling more by then, and I started noticing the lit windows I passed and the neighbours whose names I never learned. This album is all of them. We made it over a wet October, and a power cut during one session gave us the candle song more or less for free. Leave a light on for someone this week. It costs almost nothing.
