Postcards from the Spare Room

by Wren Hallett

Six brighter songs of letters, postcards, pawn-shop guitars and rain on tin roofs, written during a year spent mostly indoors.

Tracks

  1. 1. Second-Hand Guitar, First-Hand LoveI found a battered guitar in a pawn shop with a crack along her side and bought her on the spot. We've been inseparable since.folk-pop, bright acoustic2:32
  2. 2. Rain on the Tin Roof, Drive Me HomeA rainy-season song, written with the window open and the tin roof drumming. It taught me a rhythm I didn't know I had.xinyao-tinged folk, driving acoustic2:36
  3. 3. Every Card Was a Little DoorI kept every postcard I was ever sent, rubber-banded in a biscuit tin. Each one was a little door.xinyao-tinged folk, letter-song3:41
  4. 4. Every Page You Turned for MeA song for the blue ink bleeding at the edges of an old letter. It was written slowly and sung slower.xinyao-tinged folk, nostalgic ballad3:32
  5. 5. I Never Win Anything (But Look at This Ribbon)I have never won anything, and then I won a ribbon. I wrote this while still wearing it.folk-pop, playful folk3:07
  6. 6. The Road Home Hums at DuskThe windows down, the fields gone amber and the radio fading out. It's the closest I've come to a road song.driving acoustic, pastoral folk3:00

Liner notes

That year the world shrank to my flat, so I wrote about letters and postcards and anywhere I could imagine going. These came out a little brighter than I'm used to, with a bit of a hum in the step. I still recorded them at the table, but I let the guitar swing a little.
