Windowsill Weather

by Wren Hallett

Ten songs watched from a windowsill: night-time houses, small apologies, gates left open and the light that stays on.

Tracks

  1. 1. Half Past Three, the House Is HummingThe fridge hums, the radiator ticks and the landing board creaks. I wrote it listening to the house talk to itself.night folk, hushed acoustic3:32
  2. 2. I Owe You a Better WordI said something sharp over the dishes and spent weeks searching for a better word. This is as close as I got.confessional folk, bedroom folk3:41
  3. 3. The Gate I Never Closed Behind MeI left a garden gate open the morning I moved away, and I like to think it's still waiting. It's the song I'd play first for anyone who asks.pastoral folk, wistful folk3:29
  4. 4. Still Dancing in the HallwayA lamp, a dried dish, a song from the shelf, and you in the hallway. It's the same dance as before, only slower.kitchen folk, romantic folk3:10
  5. 5. Thank You for Leaving the Light OnSomebody left the light on for me and I never said thank you, so I wrote it down. The borrowed coat is back, by the way.hushed folk, late-night ballad3:26
  6. 6. Three O'Clock and the Tap Is DrippingThe tap drips at three in the morning and I can't stop counting. It's a lullaby for the sleepless.night folk, insomnia folk3:44
  7. 7. The Lamp Man Knocked TwiceThe power went out in a storm, so I sat on the carpet with one little flame and wrote this by hand. I still think of the lamp man.candlelit folk, hushed folk3:31
  8. 8. Dear Whoever Finds This PageI wrote this in pencil on yellow paper and folded it small, and then I recorded it as if somebody might find it. It felt like a message in a bottle.diaristic folk, pastoral folk4:12
  9. 9. Flour on the Windowsill, Rain on the GlassMy grandmother's recipe, the slanted hand, flour on the sill and rain on the glass. It smells of Sunday when I sing it.heirloom folk, cosy acoustic3:30
  10. 10. Number Twelve Leaves the Bins Out for MeMy neighbour and I have only ever said good morning, and I've come to treasure it. He still takes my bins out when it rains.neighbourly folk, hushed folk3:25

Liner notes

I moved my chair to the window for this one. Most of it was written at night with the house ticking around me, and a few songs are apologies I never quite managed to say out loud. I started layering a second guitar and some humming, but only where it felt like a blanket and not a wall. The gate on the cover is my mum's, and yes, it's still open.
