Tracks

  1. 1. Late for Everything but YouRunning with a bag and a half-eaten jam sandwich. A bright opener, because every harbour needs a late arrival.whimsical pop, chamber pop3:45
  2. 2. The Toast My Sister Never GaveA toast written on a napkin in the car and never given. I wrote it for my sister and for everyone with a folded speech.art song, orchestral ballad3:35

  4. 4. Mother's Hands Learn the Stairs SlowlyA hand on the rail, counting the stairs aloud. It is the hardest song on the record for me to sing.art song, chamber ballad4:21
  5. 5. The Ice Machine Hums on Floor SevenMidnight in socks and slippers with an ice bucket. I allowed myself one purely silly song on a serious record.lounge, whimsical pop3:52
  6. 6. The Breakfast Trolley Rolls at SixA trolley rolling at six before the guests wake. I wanted it to sound like the kindest part of a hotel.art song, cosy chamber4:18
  7. 7. The Seat I Could Not Settle InA pillow turned twice, a clock too loud. I wrote it on a long-haul night with no sleep at all.art song, impressionist3:39
  8. 8. What I Would Have Said Over ChampagneAnother folded napkin, this time in a corridor. What I would have said, if the champagne had been quieter.art song, romantic ballad3:22
  9. 9. A Postcard from the Neon MileA motel sign humming pink and blue. The full strings turn a lonely room into a film.cinematic pop, dream pop4:16
  10. 10. The Shutters Hold Until the MorningThe wind rattles the latch like a question, and the shutters hold. Hope in a very small voice.art song, celtic ballad4:17
  11. 11. Run for the Last FerryA quarter to the hour, the wrong side of town and the last boat leaving. The strings do the running for me.driving pop, orchestral pop3:17

Liner notes

Harbour Light is the record where the strings finally arrived in full. I spent a year touring and writing in rooms that were never mine, and these songs are postcards from them. A ferry stern, an ice machine on floor seven, a napkin speech never delivered. I asked the arranger to make the orchestra sound like a lighthouse sweeping the water, and she did.
