The Cab Driver Hummed Along

“A midnight cab on the ring road, and the driver quietly humming along to the radio. It's the nicest company I've had in a taxi.”

Lyrics

Past midnight on the ring road
The meter ticking slow
He turned the radio down low
And said, you look worn through, you know

He told me of his daughter
Who plays the violin
Of every fare he ever drove
And the stories they brought in

The cab driver hummed along
To a song I could not name
Wheels on the wet road turning
And the city all the same
But something in the humming
Made the long night feel less long
Oh, the cab driver hummed along
And I found my way back home

He took the quiet back streets
Where the sleeping windows glow
He said every light is someone
Who has somewhere they must go

The cab driver hummed along
To a song I could not name
Wheels on the wet road turning
And the city all the same
But something in the humming
Made the long night feel less long
Oh, the cab driver hummed along
And I found my way back home

I paid him and I thanked him
He just tipped his cap and smiled
Some kindnesses ride quietly
For a mile or for a mile

The cab driver hummed along
To a song I could not name
Wheels on the wet road turning
And the city all the same
But something in the humming
Made the long night feel less long
Oh, the cab driver hummed along
And I found my way back home

Humming, humming
All the way back home
