Laundromat Waltz

by Marcus Bell Quartet

Everyday scenes, laundromats to graduations, played in the dimmest light we could find.

Tracks

  1. 1. You Look the Same in This LightTen years, one table, and a light that's kinder than it should be. I think this is the best lyric I've written.nostalgic jazz, torch ballad3:44
  2. 2. Quarter in the Dryer, Dancing Shoes OnMidnight at the laundromat, nothing else to do, so why not dance. It's our most playful moment, in a very slow way.groove jazz, lounge pop3:44
  3. 3. Taxi Never Came, So I DancedTerrible dinner, no cab, so we danced on the pavement. Bad evenings sometimes make the best songs.lounge pop, bossa-tinged jazz3:09
  4. 4. The Man Behind Door FourI know the step on the other side of that wall by heart. A hushed one, nearly whispered.hushed jazz, chamber jazz3:20
  5. 5. Trumpet on the Corner of Fifth and NineA man, an old brown case and a horn held high. Theo took the solo and made it sound like a street corner in summer.street jazz, swing pop2:25
  6. 6. Fourth Floor, Room Four-ElevenA red carpet that swallows your steps and a hundred closed doors. Written in an actual hotel corridor at two in the morning.hotel bar jazz, cool jazz3:32
  7. 7. Better Apart, Still FriendsA breakup with a handshake, ten good years and no hard feelings. Surprisingly cheerful, which is how it felt.groove jazz, lounge pop2:28
  8. 8. Parallel Parking at MidnightLearning to drive at forty-two, with a lovely instructor and an excellent view. Never too late for midnight lessons.romantic jazz, lounge jazz3:06
  9. 9. Cap and Gown Under the StreetlightA gown too long and a cap that won't sit up straight. A song for anyone who finished late and finished anyway.hopeful jazz, cool jazz3:39
  10. 10. You Came Back Down the Same StreetTwenty years since the station, and then you walked back down the same street. I kept the vocal low so it wouldn't break.torch jazz, nostalgic jazz4:22
  11. 11. Dusk Drive Home, Windows DownWindows down, sun behind the water tower, nowhere to be. We recorded it at dusk to get the colour right.dream jazz, driving jazz3:32

Liner notes

Somewhere between records we started noticing small, ordinary moments: a dryer going round, a gown that doesn't fit, a father on the stairs. This album is a stack of those moments, sung close to the microphone. We left some of the room noise in on purpose. It felt more honest than a clean take. - Marcus
