Marcus Bell Quartet

A vibraphone-led quartet fronted by an unhurried baritone. Cool, after-hours vocal jazz for the quiet end of the evening.

Played on The Late Tram with Hollis Grant

Their story

Marcus Bell was a session singer in Chicago when he met vibraphonist Theo Lindqvist at a hotel-bar residency in 2010, and the quartet formed around their shared taste for slow tempos. 'Ice in the Glass' (2012) found a quiet audience, and 'Midnight Mallets' (2016) and 'The Long Way Round' (2020) refined their cool, spacious sound. They play late slots by preference and rarely raise the volume above conversation.

The band

  • Marcus Bell vocals
  • Theo Lindqvist vibraphone
  • Raymond Cole tenor saxophone
  • Aiden Park upright bass

Influences: Cool-school West Coast vocal jazz, vibraphone lounge records, after-hours hotel bars, unhurried crooner phrasing

Latest from Marcus Bell Quartet

  • Friday night, end of October, and the studio has gone quiet the way we like it. We're still tucked in with "After the Last Tram", our EP about the walk home after the last ride, when the city finally lowers its voice. Theo is playing the vibraphone with the mallets barely touching the bars. Thanks for the 36 plays this week. Pour something slow and dim the lights. Good night, friends.
