Frangipani Afternoons

by Marigold Tan

Five small, sun-warmed memories from a humid Singapore afternoon, sung the way the community-centre guitar class taught me.

Tracks

  1. 1. Second-Hand BicycleI bought my first bicycle from a stranger for almost nothing, and that rattling bell made me feel like I owned the whole neighbourhood. It's the song I wrote to open every show.bedroom folk, singalong pop3:55
  2. 2. Library CardI still remember the blue, bent card with my name in a looping hand. This one is for every kid who found a whole world on a library shelf.campus ballad, acoustic nostalgia2:57
  3. 3. The Atlas on the Window SeatThe window seat at my grandmother's place had a faded green cushion and an atlas I never finished reading. I wrote this thinking about all the places I planned to go.dream folk, xinyao-inspired3:02
  4. 4. The Piano Tuner's AfternoonThe piano tuner came every Thursday and made our old upright sound new for an hour. I tried to capture that small, quiet joy of something being put right.parlour folk, tender ballad3:22
  5. 5. The Neighbour's RadioA crackly radio floated over the fence one afternoon while I was hanging laundry, and it stopped me completely. I closed the EP with it because it feels like the day winding down.porch ballad, nostalgic folk3:21

Liner notes

I wrote these in the corner of a community-centre classroom with a borrowed guitar and a fan that never quite worked. I had my parents' xinyao cassettes in my head the whole time, those plain, honest campus melodies you could sing after hearing them once. I wanted every song to feel like an afternoon when the heat finally lets up and everyone drifts outside. We recorded it in a few days, mostly live, with the windows open, and you can hear the room if you listen closely. Thank you to everyone who passed it along to a friend.
