Almost Texts

by Veda Monroe

Five dorm-room slow jams about the space between a message sent and a message answered.

Tracks

  1. 1. Two Time Zones AwayThis was the first original I ever finished. I wrote it on a call where it was midnight for me and morning for them, and I just kept the phone on the pillow.neo-soul, bedroom r&b3:04
  2. 2. Left on Read at Rush HourStuck in traffic watching three dots appear and disappear. I hummed the hook into a voice memo before the light even turned green.slow jam, contemporary r&b3:25
  3. 3. Rooftop Slow DanceA rooftop, string lights, and nobody I was brave enough to ask to dance. So I wrote the dance instead.neo-soul, dream soul3:30
  4. 4. Window Seat on the Night BusMe on the night bus, forehead on the glass, singing in my head. I stacked the harmonies like a choir that only I could hear.late-night r&b, choir soul3:59
  5. 5. Tow Truck TendernessA breakdown on the highway shoulder turned into the sweetest night. It closes the EP because it ends on hope.gospel-tinged soul, slow jam3:15

Liner notes

I recorded these in my dorm room with a blanket over the closet door so the harmonies wouldn't echo. Every stacked vocal is me, layered one at a time after midnight, because that's when the building finally got quiet. These were the first songs I ever wrote that weren't covers, and I was terrified of them. They're all about almost: almost calling, almost saying it, almost over the time difference.
