Umbrella Weather

by Teddy Okafor Trio

A rainy-weekend debut of small Lisbon scenes: shop bells, trams, doorways and harbour fog, played live in one room.

Tracks

  1. 1. The Record Shop on Alder LaneI wanted to open with a door and a bell, because that's how every evening in Lisbon starts for me. The late ring is the whole song.bossa nova, brazilian songbook4:38
  2. 2. Bossa for a Wet DoorwayWe wrote this ducking out of the weather, and it still smells of wet wool to me. Lena's intro is the sound of the sky letting go.rainy-night bossa, romantic jazz3:50
  3. 3. Tuesday Tram WindowThe slowest tram in the city deserves the slowest tune we have. Danny plays it all on brushes.bossa nova, cafe jazz3:55
  4. 4. Newsstand Man at Half Past SixA bit of sunshine in the middle of the grey. The newsstand man really does whistle along when we play it.bossa nova, easy swing4:00
  5. 5. Hem of a Stranger's Wedding DressA song about pins, lamplight and somebody else's happiest day. I played nylon guitar and kept it very quiet.bossa nova, chamber jazz4:54
  6. 6. Paper Boats in the GutterI watched a boy do this on my street and forgot where I was going. Joaquim's bass is the little current under the boats.bossa nova, nostalgic jazz3:24
  7. 7. Foghorn BossaThe harbour fog is the same one every winter, and this is its lullaby. We played it almost at a whisper.bossa nova, hushed jazz3:24
  8. 8. Ferry Ticket, Window SeatOne ticket, one window seat, nobody expecting you. It's the happiest kind of lonely.bossa nova, seaside jazz3:21
  9. 9. Bread Before the SunThe odd one out, a soul song about a baker's two o'clock start. It was the first thing we ever played together, so it stays on the record.soul, warm groove3:36
  10. 10. Night Bus Across the RiverWe closed the weekend with this one, the last bus of the night over the water. By then everyone in the room was a little tired and it shows in the best way.bossa nova, late-night jazz3:25

Liner notes

We booked a little room for one weekend and it rained the whole time, so the rain got on the record whether we liked it or not. Lena found the chords on the first night, Joaquim and Danny tucked in underneath, and I sang everything close to the microphone so the brushes could be heard. Nothing here was fixed afterwards. If you hear a chair creak, that's the take we kept.
