Yellow Dress

by Zuri Bell

Five bright morning songs first sketched as voice notes on a borrowed phone in Lagos.

Tracks

  1. 1. Mango Season MorningThis is the song that woke the whole house up. I wrote it with the rooster as my co-writer, and he wanted credit.highlife-pop, sunrise afrobeats2:48
  2. 2. Saturday Market SunshineSaturday market is my church after church. I sing it with a canvas bag on my shoulder every single time.market afrobeats, highlife4:21
  3. 3. Toast Pops Up DancingA silly one about toast, and I will not apologise. The bounce in the bass is the toaster, basically.kitchen afrobeats, playful pop2:04
  4. 4. Sand in My SandwichI had never really seen the beach in winter until I wrote this, so I made up a summer one. Sand in the sandwich is the best kind of problem.beach pop, sunny pop2:40
  5. 5. Lemonade Stand LegendsWe closed the EP on a lemonade stand because that is where every dream of mine started, with a crooked cardboard sign.nostalgic pop, sunny pop3:08

Liner notes

I made these on a borrowed phone, humming into it under the stairs so nobody would hear me. Every song is a morning I actually had: the rooster, the market, the toast, the lemonade stand down the road. My choir friends came over and we crowded around one microphone for the choruses, and that is still how I do it. The yellow dress was real, by the way, and I wore it until it nearly fell apart.
