Hank's Garage, Again

by Dusty Calloway

Homecoming songs: the garage where it began, the people who stayed, and one more stubborn chorus.

Tracks

  1. 1. Tuning Up in Hank's Garage AgainTwenty years since we shared a stage and Hank's garage still smells like oil and age. I plugged in the Telecaster and it remembered everything.heartland rock, homecoming song4:09
  2. 2. Nobody Gets to Tell Me I'm DoneThey told me I was too old for the road and said sell the rig. I'm writing this from the van, thanks.heartland rock, defiant anthem3:56
  3. 3. Reading Glasses on the DashboardMom's reading glasses are still on the dashboard where she left them on the drive to church. Nobody in the family has moved them, and I never will.americana, family ballad4:19
  4. 4. Static Between the StationsMama's kitchen radio never could settle on a station, and I think that's where my ear came from. I kept a little static in the mix on purpose.rock ballad, kitchen-radio song3:46
  5. 5. Locking Up the Schoolhouse in JuneI drive the bus the last day every year and watch the kids spill out like they're shot from a gun. It's the happiest sad job in the county.warm rock, school-days ballad3:37
  6. 6. Tip Jar Serenade for a Rainy TuesdayUnder an awning by the subway stairs with cold hands and a tip jar. I wrote it for every busker who kept playing in the rain.street-corner ballad, rock ballad4:06
  7. 7. Boxes Down the Porch StepsDad's old hand truck squeaks across the floor and Mama tapes up the last box by the door. Every move I've made sounded a little like this.family ballad, moving-day song4:01
  8. 8. Floodlights Humming After the Final OutThe crowd went home an hour ago and the paper cups are all that's left in the quiet rows. I stayed to hear it for a minute.hushed rock, after-the-show ballad4:06
  9. 9. Downshift on the Devil's StaircaseMidnight on the mountain with fog on the glass and forty tons behind me on the hairpins. It's the slow hymn I close with when the lights go down.hymn rock, mountain ballad3:19

Liner notes

For the newest record I went back to Hank's garage, the same oil-and-old-wood smell, the same cracked concrete. Mom's glasses on a dashboard, a radio that never stood still, a bus driver locking up the schoolhouse in June. I'm older and the voice is gravel, but the Telecaster is the same one and the Hammond still swells where it wants to. I close every show with a slow hymn, and I tried to make the last track on this one feel like that goodnight.
