Lanterns Down at Closing Time

by The Gilded Chorale

Five small-hours hymns for church-hall kitchens, with pop choruses smuggled in among the anthems.

Tracks

  1. 1. Lanterns Down at Closing TimeWe wrote this about the end of our own rehearsal nights, chairs stacked and the kettle still warm. It felt right to open the very first record by switching the lights off.choral pop, hymnody4:24
  2. 2. Horizon Is a Open DoorThe first time we sang a chorus big enough to need the whole hall. That bad grammar in the title stayed because Tobias said it sounded like a real person's sign.anthemic choir, stadium pop3:51
  3. 3. Sixty Seconds to YesA song about the minute before you say the brave thing. The key change at the end was our first, and we were far too pleased with ourselves.choral pop, key-change anthem3:05
  4. 4. The Kindness of Strangers' HandsSmall kindnesses are the whole point of a choir, really. This one is just twelve people being gentle at once.operatic pop, folk hymn3:29
  5. 5. When the Heatwave Finally BrokeWe wrote it in the long hot summer when the hall had no air at all. When the weather broke we all ran out and sang on the grass.choral pop, uplifting3:34

Liner notes

This is where it started: twelve of us in the church hall in Bristol, stacking chairs after rehearsal and singing the tunes we weren't meant to be singing. Tobias kept slipping pop arrangements between the anthems, and nobody complained. We recorded it in one long evening with the radiators ticking, and left the sound of the room in on purpose.
