Midnight Mallets

by Marcus Bell Quartet

Rain, rooftops and apologies: the quartet's cool, spacious sound settles into itself.

Tracks

  1. 1. Wrong Door, Right RainDressed for the wrong party on the wrong street, and somehow it still turned out all right. I like a song where the mistake is the point.cool jazz, torch jazz3:34
  2. 2. Rooftop Hours Before RainThe sky is about to open and I'm not in any hurry to go inside. Theo's mallets sound like the first drops.after-hours jazz, vibraphone jazz3:16
  3. 3. I Owe You a Sorry, DearI said it, I can't take it back, so I sang it instead. The plainest apology I've ever written.torch ballad, vocal jazz3:29
  4. 4. Number Nine to the Harbour LightsDoors sigh, rain on the glass, a bus to the harbour. We tried to make the rhythm feel like the ride.lounge pop, cool jazz4:19
  5. 5. Dawn Delivery, Day OneBread, a bicycle bell and a blue five a.m. street. The one song on the record where the sun is actually coming up.morning jazz, vocal jazz3:34
  6. 6. Suitcase Full of Sheet MusicA stranger in a city he can't pronounce, with only his music for luggage. It's partly my own story, if I'm honest.hopeful jazz, lounge pop2:58
  7. 7. Corner Trumpet, Midnight CoinsA trumpet, a hat and a few coins at midnight. We gave the trumpet's part to Theo's vibes and it works surprisingly well.street jazz, lounge pop3:05
  8. 8. Three A.M., Chairs in a RowChairs in a row, a clock ticking slow, and nobody to talk to. The loneliest hour, sung as gently as I could manage.hushed jazz, torch jazz4:57
  9. 9. Raise a Glass to the Two of YouA best man's speech with shaky knees. I wanted it warm and a little wobbly, and we kept the wobble in.wedding jazz, swing pop3:25
  10. 10. Soft Rain on the Noodle CartSteam rising off a noodle cart in the lamplight. We tried to make the vibraphone sound like warm broth.dream jazz, cosy jazz3:16

Liner notes

By 2016 we knew exactly how little we needed. Theo's vibraphone got more room, my phrasing got slower, and the drummer learned to play like someone setting down a cup. Most of these were written walking home from late sets, so there's a lot of weather in them. We recorded close to midnight, because anything earlier felt like cheating. - Marcus
