Last Light on 40

by Dusty Calloway

Big singalong choruses built for crowds, written about hitting the road one more time.

Tracks

  1. 1. The Road Remembers Your NameI swore I'd never come back to that town, and then I did, and it let me in without a word. That's the chorus the whole room sings.heartland rock, singalong anthem4:02
  2. 2. Cocoa on the Cab HeaterA thermos of cocoa on a cold cab heater is its own kind of luxury. I wrote it cosy because winter out there is not.cosy rock, road ballad3:43
  3. 3. Summer Starts at Three-FifteenWaiting outside the schoolyard on the last day with the engine ticking, I was the happiest man in Texas. I don't care if that sounds sappy.family ballad, heartland rock3:51
  4. 4. Thermos Light at the Rest StopA rest stop at a quarter to three, and the engine ticks like it's talking just to me. Some nights that's enough company.slow rock, late-night road song4:23
  5. 5. Stopped at a Quarter to NineMy daddy's watch stopped in a motel room with the hands at a quarter to nine, and I've kept it in the van ever since. This is the saddest one I've written.melancholy rock, family ballad3:56
  6. 6. Unpacking Boxes at Fifty-ThreeFifty-three years old, a rented place by a slow river, and a stack of boxes I didn't want to open. Starting over is mostly unpacking.rock ballad, second-chance song4:27
  7. 7. Itchy Feet and an Open TankFifteen years in the same front room with a dent in the same chair is how a man talks himself into staying. This is the song that talks him out of it.heartland rock, anthem4:12
  8. 8. Walk Me Home Beneath Your UmbrellaRain on the picture show, one umbrella, and a walk home that took forty minutes for a ten-minute trip. I'd do it again.romantic rock, slow dance4:07
  9. 9. The Last Train Out of Harlan JunctionRain on the platform and one flickering lamp at Harlan Junction. I imagined the train was already gone and wrote about whoever was left on the bench.train ballad, americana rock4:34
  10. 10. Quarters in the Midnight DryerA laundromat at midnight with one old man and a bag of clothes has more poetry in it than most books. I just wrote down what I saw.night-shift ballad, heartland rock4:10
  11. 11. Postcard from a Town I Can't Stay InA postcard of a bridge, a pen chained to the counter, and a town I loved but couldn't stay in. I think I sent it to myself.hopeful rock, road song3:31

Liner notes

After the van started selling out rooms, I realised the choruses were doing something I hadn't planned: strangers were singing them back at me louder than I could. So I wrote this one for them, with long open choruses and room for a Hammond swell to carry everybody home. We tracked most of it on the road in whatever room had decent air. Highway 40 gave me the title, and I couldn't shake it.
