Last Train Home

by Moth Static

A self-released tape of empty stations, humming machines and the last train of the night.

Tracks

  1. 1. Dining Car, Slow TeacupsOur opener because it felt like sitting down with a cup of tea at 1am. Imogen's first backing vocal is on this one.slowcore, bedroom pop3:26
  2. 2. Ice Rink After ClosingThe freezer hum is a real recording from the rink where Tomas worked. We pitched it down until it sounded like a pad.ambient pop, tape haze3:50
  3. 3. Vending Machine Glow, Platform TwoThis is the song people mention most, and it's about a snack machine. I've made peace with that.shoegaze, lo-fi dream pop3:52
  4. 4. Window Across the CourtyardI watched a stranger's yellow window for most of a winter. I never met them, and the song is the nearest I got to saying hello.slowcore, bedroom pop4:00
  5. 5. Lift Operator, Floor by FloorBrass doors, empty hotel, nobody going up. Tomas played the slow bass on a guitar with the strings slackened.ambient pop, slowcore3:21
  6. 6. Cable Car, Hanging Over the LightsWe tried to make the guitars feel like a cabin swaying above a city. It took far too many takes of the same chord.shoegaze, dream pop4:51
  7. 7. Bell Buoy, Slow SwellA bell buoy is a lonely sort of instrument, so we gave it the saddest chord we knew.slowcore, ambient3:54
  8. 8. Switchboard Light, Soft StaticImogen found an old switchboard panel at a car boot sale and we recorded its clicks. They're the percussion here.lo-fi, ambient pop3:11
  9. 9. Paper Boat Harbour, Rain RipplesWritten on a rainy bank holiday, mostly with a pencil on a tea-stained notepad. It's the quietest one on the tape.bedroom pop, tape haze3:11
  10. 10. Neon Sign, Humming PinkThe closer, and a nod to the pink sign opposite our flat that never switched off. It's how the tape ends: someone else's light still on.shoegaze, nostalgic pop3:12

Liner notes

Tomas and Imogen had joined by now, which is why there's finally a second voice and something that almost counts as a rhythm section. We dubbed the tapes ourselves on a stack of cheap decks and hand-wrote the covers. The idea was simple: the feeling of being the only person left on a platform, and being weirdly OK with it. We recorded it all between midnight and four, and you can probably hear that.
