Platform Lights

by Isla Brennan

Two late-night songs from a church hall in Glasgow: one about the last notes before leaving, one about the small hope of rain shared under an umbrella.

Tracks

  1. 1. The Lobby Piano Closes at MidnightI wrote this thinking of the last hour in the jazz bars where I first dared to sing, when the brass is polished and only the piano is left. I kept it hushed on purpose, like closing a door gently so you don't wake the room.torch ballad, chamber jazz, late night4:42
  2. 2. Umbrella for Two, Quarter Past NineThis is the B-side where the weather turns kind: a stranger, a bus stop, and one umbrella between two people. I let the cello sway a little here, because even my sad songs like to hope.jazz bossa, chamber pop, rainy day3:30

Liner notes

We recorded these in a church hall in Glasgow with a pianist, a cellist and one borrowed lamp, usually after the building had emptied and the rain had started up on the roof. I trained as a cellist before I ever trusted my own voice, so I wanted the cello to sit right beside me, not behind me. The first song is for the end of the night, when the piano is the last thing still talking. The second is for the moment you decide to stay a little longer. Leaving and returning, that's all I seem to write about, and this is where it started.
