Amber Corridor

by Vanta Lux

Twelve warm rooms and slow hallways, drawn in amber light, where the groove moves like someone walking home unhurried.

Tracks

  1. 1. Soup for the StormThunder over the roof and a pot on the stove. It's the opener because it tells you right away it's going to be cosy.cosy house, dub house3:42
  2. 2. Tomato Vines on the RoofUp the stairs in the dark with a water can in my hand. The vines are real and so is the dark.hushed deep house, ambient house3:43
  3. 3. Crossing the Water, Lights BehindStanding on the deck with the lights behind me. I let the pad swell like the wake of a boat.wistful deep house, dreamy ambient3:25
  4. 4. Lamp on in the Next WindowYour lamp is on across the way. This is the single-line hook I'm proudest of, sung maybe four times in nine minutes.tender deep house, minimal house2:22
  5. 5. Ironing the Good ShirtIroning the good shirt with the radio low. Getting ready is its own kind of dance.groovy house, chicago-leaning2:55

  7. 7. Dawn on the Roof, Tea Going ColdBlanket round my shoulders, tea going cold, door stiff. A rooftop breakdown that goes on exactly as long as the tea does.cosy deep house, ambient house3:44
  8. 8. Flowers by the Till, Half PriceBuckets by the door and tulips in the light. The most playful thing I've done, and I kept the little bounce in the bass.playful deep house, soulful house3:26
  9. 9. Bookshop After ClosingSign says closed, lights stay low. I wrote it about a bookshop that let me stay and listen.smooth deep house, late-night groove3:26
  10. 10. Piano in the SquareAn old piano that anyone can play. I sampled my own clumsy hands and looped them.joyful house, piano house4:15
  11. 11. Seafront Café, Chairs on the TablesChairs on the tables and the sea gone grey. A soft little thing, bright at the edges.tender house, coastal house3:08
  12. 12. Tea at the Top of the LightA hundred steps up to a kettle and a lamp. The closer, because the best place to end a night is somewhere high and warm.romantic house, smooth house2:55

Liner notes

By 2018 I'd stopped trying to make the tracks bigger and started trying to make them closer. Amber Corridor is the sound of a long hallway with one lamp on: soup on the stove, tomato vines on the roof, a lamp lit in the next window. I recorded it in single takes across a run of nights and kept the mistakes that sounded like breathing.
