Safety Pin Saints

A three-chord pop-punk trio from a Sacramento skate-park basement. Fast, funny and secretly sentimental, with choruses built for a whole room to shout back.

Played on Loud & Proud with Ray "Brimstone" Tolliver

Their story

Safety Pin Saints began in 2011 in the basement of a skate park, with three friends who owned one amp between them. Their self-released EP 'Grind Rails and Grape Soda' got them onto every all-ages bill in the valley, and the 2014 debut album 'Three Chords and a Bad Haircut' turned them into a touring staple. Follow-ups 'Sorry About the Van' and 'Everyone Gets a Trophy' sharpened the jokes and slipped in a few honest songs about growing up and missing home. A decade and five records in, they still record fast, shout everything and hide the sentimental stuff in the last chorus.

The band

  • Danny Okonkwo-Reyes vocals, rhythm guitar
  • Mickey Tran bass, backing vocals
  • Flick Haverty drums, gang vocals

Influences: Skate-video soundtracks, basement-show fanzines, sing-along terrace chants, early-90s melodic punk 7-inches and bubblegum pop hooks
