Diploma Folded in My Back Pocket

Lyrics

I walked across the stage in my grandma's lucky shoes
Shook the principal's hand and I had nothing to lose
They gave me a paper tube with a ribbon on the top
I'm gonna fold it up small, and I'm never gonna stop

The whole town's at the barbecue, the band is playing loud
My cousin's dancing with the mayor, and he's drawing a crowd
Aunt Ruth is selling pie slices at a price that makes me laugh
And I'm wearing a gown that's made for someone twice as tall by half

Diploma in my back pocket, sunshine on my face
Got a long road before me and a slow and steady pace
Diploma in my back pocket, and a heart that's feeling bold
Nobody ever told me that the world was this gold
Two-step through the evening, swing it round and round
Diploma in my back pocket, and I'm bound for anywhere I'm bound

My dad is by the grill with a tear he won't admit
My mama's got the camera and she's taking every bit
My brother says congrats, then he asks to borrow cash
I say that's the real world, here's a hug, and we laugh

Diploma in my back pocket, sunshine on my face
Got a long road before me and a slow and steady pace
Diploma in my back pocket, and a heart that's feeling bold
Nobody ever told me that the world was this gold
Two-step through the evening, swing it round and round
Diploma in my back pocket, and I'm bound for anywhere I'm bound

Sway with me, sway with me
Whatever I'm going to be
Tonight I'm just a kid and a song
And the summer's been long overdue

Diploma in my back pocket, sunshine on my face
Got a long road before me and a slow and steady pace
Diploma in my back pocket, and a heart that's feeling bold
Nobody ever told me that the world was this gold
Two-step through the evening, swing it round and round
Diploma in my back pocket, and I'm bound for anywhere I'm bound

Diploma in my back pocket
Sunshine on my face
