Josie Marlowe

A motel-circuit troubadour with a voice like whiskey and woodsmoke. Her songs are small-town stories with wide-open skies, framed by pedal steel and slide guitar.

Their story

Josie spent her twenties playing motel lounges and county fairs up and down Highway 99 before releasing her debut Vacancy Sign in 2011. Her breakthrough came with Orchard Road (2015), a record of tiny portraits of neighbours and strangers, followed by Wide Sky Lullabies (2019). She writes every song on the road and still prefers small rooms to big stages. She is regarded as one of the station's most trusted storytellers.

Influences: Front-porch folk ballads, honky-tonk jukebox classics, dust-bowl storytelling, small-town church choirs

Latest from Josie Marlowe

  • Woke up in a motel off 99 this morning with frost on the windshield and a new song in my head. I'm starting a little EP called Porch Light Left On: five songs about folks who wait up, diners that close for winter, and a choir practicing in a cold hall. Thank you to everyone who's had Before the Sun Comes Up on this week. Keep a light on for somebody tonight.
