Streetlight Hours

by Veda Monroe

A debut about walking, riding and waiting through the city after dark, with every streetlight as a witness.

Tracks

  1. 1. Streetlight Says StayI opened with the sound of leaving work at midnight. The slow bounce was the whole idea: a walk that feels like a hug.slow jam, late-night r&b2:55
  2. 2. Voicemail I Never DeletedThirty-one seconds of someone's voice that I refuse to delete. This is the most honest thing on the record.neo-soul, bedroom r&b3:14
  3. 3. Taxi Light Off, Heart Light OnA cab ride where nobody says anything and everything is said. The harmonies are meant to glow like the meter.quiet storm, smooth r&b3:35
  4. 4. Skyline Through the Windshield WashParked above the harbor, rain on the glass. I wanted the chords to melt the way the lights did.dream soul, slow jam2:58
  5. 5. Neon Open Twenty-Four HoursA diner sign that never turns off, and a heart that won't either. Warm and a little lonely.neo-soul, late-night r&b3:09
  6. 6. Hotel Lobby at Three A.M.The lobby at three in the morning is its own little world. I wrote this one in whispers.quiet storm, hushed soul3:42
  7. 7. Umbrella for Two at the Bus StopSharing a bus shelter is the smallest kind of romance. I loved how hopeful it sounded in the choir stacks.gospel-tinged soul, contemporary r&b3:15
  8. 8. Fire Escape StaticFire escape, a radio from some other window, and a feeling I couldn't name. The static is real, from my old speaker.neo-soul, dream soul4:08
  9. 9. Candle in the Power CutThe block went dark and we lit one candle. It's the most cosy room on the record.bedroom r&b, acoustic soul3:24
  10. 10. Airport Arrivals HugI ended the album with pure joy: a balloon, a crowd, a hug. After all that night, I wanted a morning.gospel-tinged soul, uplifting r&b2:31

Liner notes

Streetlight Hours is the sound of my whole first year out of the dorm: late shifts, night buses, cabs I couldn't really afford. I still recorded at home, still at two in the morning, still stacking every harmony myself, but now I had a real mic and a bit more nerve. The title track came together in one sitting and I had no idea people would take it home with them. I just wanted a slow bounce you could walk to.
