Letters from the Road, Postmarked Home

by Teddy Okafor Trio

Winter trams, new towns and old friends: a travelling band writing letters home.

Tracks

  1. 1. Guitar Case, New Town, Yellow DoorI got off a train in a new town with a guitar case and a map I couldn't read. This is the song of that first evening.bossa nova, travelling jazz2:54
  2. 2. My Guitar Knows the Way HomeI don't need a map, just six strings and good shoes. It's a promise I make to myself every time we leave.bossa nova, easy swing3:09
  3. 3. Sunday Drive With the Windows DownSunday afternoon, nowhere to be, and the windows down. We recorded it on the hottest day of the year and it shows.jazz-pop, road-trip swing3:10
  4. 4. Keep the Promise, Cross the BridgeA promise I made years ago at a bridge, and I finally kept it. The biggest song we have, and still played with brushes.bossa nova, anthemic jazz3:26
  5. 5. The Band Plays On Without a NameWe had a name on a poster once, painted gold. It's about the years before anyone knew who we were.bossa nova, nostalgic jazz3:13
  6. 6. We Parted Like the Tide, My FriendWe walked along the harbour wall and parted like the tide does, gently and for good. Lena's solo here makes me stop singing every time.bossa nova, melancholy ballad3:45
  7. 7. Snowflake on the Tram WindowSnow on a tram window and everyone lost in a quiet dream. I wrote it on the way to a gig and nearly missed my stop.bossa nova, winter jazz3:46
  8. 8. Folding Chairs on the Front LawnTwo glasses, two chairs and the evening light. It's about the kind of quiet that only two people can make.jazz-pop, porch jazz3:29
  9. 9. Sunday Letter, Ink Still WetA pen, a sheet of paper and an open window. I wrote the letter and then wrote the tune around it.bossa nova, romantic jazz3:18
  10. 10. Chalk on My Sleeve, Last Day of JuneThe last bell rings and the hallway turns to thunder. We end the record on a cheer, because it felt rude not to.bossa nova, anthemic samba3:13

Liner notes

After the long pause we toured small rooms again, and the songs came out of train windows and borrowed beds. This record is full of leaving and coming back. Lena wrote the bridge of the promise song in a station cafe, and I played the same nylon guitar I'd carried since Lisbon. We cut it live in a day and a half, with one take of the closer that nobody wanted to improve.
