Horizon Songs

by The Gilded Chorale

Imogen Hale joins the twelve voices, and everyday mornings get hymn-sized choruses.

Tracks

  1. 1. Butterflies in Good ShoesImogen's first lead on the record, about stepping into a new street with a too-hot coffee. The chorus lifts exactly where your heart does.choral pop, stadium pop3:31
  2. 2. The Café That Learned My NameA love song to a place that slowly learned who you were. We kept the harp very quiet so the voices could do the warming.cinematic pop, folk hymn3:18
  3. 3. I Said I'd Be There by MorningA promise made at a gate and kept, just late. We built the whole choir up under the last chorus like a train arriving.anthemic choir, stadium pop3:51
  4. 4. Put Your Feet Up, MaestroA cheeky one for our director, who never sits down. He pretended not to like it and then asked for the sheet music.choral swing, playful pop2:49
  5. 5. I Was Wrong and I Am HereEverybody has rehearsed an apology on a staircase. This is for all of them, with the biggest harmonies we could muster.choral pop, anthemic choir4:45
  6. 6. Penny Sweets and Paper BagsSaturday pocket money and the corner shop, sung like it's a festival. The bass section loved the groove on this one.choral pop, gospel groove3:28
  7. 7. Half an Umbrella, Half the WaySharing a bad umbrella in the rain is the most romantic thing we know. Short and cosy, like the umbrella.cinematic pop, folk hymn3:19
  8. 8. Ink Still Wet on the MorningWritten in the chapel by lamplight, like the song says. It's about the nerve it takes to put a feeling on paper.choral pop, hymnody3:48
  9. 9. Sing It Loud in the Empty SeatsWe really did sneak in at dawn on the cleaners' shift to rehearse in an empty theatre. Singing to the seats taught us how to fill a room.operatic pop, gospel groove3:22
  10. 10. Rooftops at Thirty-Eight DegreesThe heatwave rooftop party, everyone with a blanket and a fan. We closed the record with it because the last chorus feels like the whole street singing.operatic pop, stadium pop3:48

Liner notes

Imogen arrived in 2013 and suddenly the pop arrangements had a front line to stand on. We made this record in a Bristol chapel with the organ pulled forward in the mix and the harp tucked in behind. Every song is about a small nervous moment that ends in a big sing-along, which is more or less how we feel about life.
