Gated Summer

by Kilo Meridian

A soundtrack to a non-existent coming-of-age film: one summer ending, told in motels, rinks and warm windows.

Tracks

  1. 1. Flat Tyre, Stranger's HandsScene one: a dark road and a flat tyre. The drums arrive late, like the help does.cinematic synthwave, romantic synth3:57
  2. 2. Snow That Never SettlesSnow that melts before it lands. It's the only winter scene on a summer record, and I like how out of place it feels.melancholy synth, dream pop4:03
  3. 3. Desert Motel, Neon VacancyRed neon, a buzzing sign and nobody at the desk. This is the heart of the film for me.dark synthwave, cinematic3:20
  4. 4. Three in the Morning, Still UpThree in the morning and the house is asleep. I played the bass line on the secondhand synth with one finger.nocturnal synthpop, electronica3:03
  5. 5. Ice Rink, Last SkateA last few skaters going round under low lights. The pads glide the same way.tender synth, ambient pop3:53
  6. 6. Broken Watch, Right Twice a DayA watch stopped at ten past two, still on my wrist. I like how playful a sad idea can sound.playful synthwave, nostalgic pop3:47
  7. 7. Spring in the Sleeve of My CoatI took my coat off at the door and everything felt soft. The most hopeful chords I own.romantic electronica, dream pop4:20
  8. 8. Warm Day, Window DownThe single. First warm day, window down, and a chorus built for exactly that.sunny synthpop, anthemic synthwave3:35
  9. 9. I'm Sorry, Porch Light OnI left the porch light on, twice, because I meant it twice. It's the quietest apology I've written.tender electronica, bedroom pop3:56
  10. 10. Kitchen Radio, Two Verses LeftSinging along to a song in a late kitchen. I left the mistakes in the vocal.lo-fi synth, melancholy pop3:44
  11. 11. Lighthouse Keeper's Last WinterA lighthouse keeper's last winter, and a lamp turning slow. I wanted something steady for the closing credits.cinematic synth, coastal ambient3:37
  12. 12. Pocket Watch, Gold and SlowA gold watch and being finally free, which isn't as nice as it sounds. The warm bass is the film's last shot.warm synthwave, nostalgic synth4:31

Liner notes

I wrote this like a film score first and an album second. I made a list of scenes: a flat tyre, a motel sign, a coat taken off at the door. Then I scored each scene and added words afterwards. The gated drums are as big as I could get them, because summer deserves a proper ending.
