Before the Sun Comes Up

by Josie Marlowe

Five back-road and rooftop songs: a fiddle on a bench, a finished fence and one last slow dance under the stars.

Tracks

  1. 1. Fiddle Case on the Bus Station BenchI opened my fiddle case on a bus station bench at a quarter to ten and started playing again. A stranger put in a dollar and I kept it.busker country, playful twang3:39
  2. 2. Nobody Saw Me Finish ItI painted the fence at the edge of town over three summers and nobody saw me finish it. I like it better that way.quiet-work folk, dreamy americana3:37
  3. 3. Slide Guitar Down the Back Road HomeWindows cracked, dust rolling slow and the radio low. It is the road home as I always hear it, with slide guitar all the way.slide guitar country, back-road groove2:54
  4. 4. Cabin Lights Above the SwitchbackEleven turns up the mountain and then the lights of a cabin. I wrote it for anyone who has ever driven up toward someone waiting.mountain cabin country, warm romantic twang3:47
  5. 5. Slow Dance on the Roof Before the SunUp the stairwell past the sleeping floors and out onto a rusty roof where the whole sky is yours. This is where the record, and for now the story, ends.rooftop slow dance, dreamy country3:57

Liner notes

This is my newest record, and it is five songs I wrote in a single autumn. I still prefer a small room to a big stage, so we tracked it in one afternoon in my friend's barn with everyone sitting in a circle. These songs are about finishing things quietly, like a fence nobody noticed or a climb to a roof before sunrise. The last dance is for whoever is still awake.
