Lift the Lamps

by The Gilded Chorale

Hymn-sized choruses for people on the move: night shifts, motels, summer bells and dancing shoes.

Tracks

  1. 1. Anywhere the Engine Wants to GoThat restless fire-in-the-feet feeling, set to the biggest drum-and-organ combo we'd tried. It's our road-trip opener.cinematic pop, stadium pop3:49
  2. 2. Home by the First LightWritten for the nurses who came to our shows straight off a twelve-hour shift. The sunrise key change is for them.anthemic choir, gospel groove3:47
  3. 3. The Canteen Never ClosesThe canteen at half past two, kettle clicking, everyone a little punchy. We kept the arrangement low and smooth like the hour.cinematic pop, choral soul3:43
  4. 4. Gran's Recipe Has No MeasurementsGran never wrote anything down and we never wrote the harmonies down either. It sounds like her kitchen.choral pop, folk hymn3:12
  5. 5. The Neon Cactus Motel Welcomes YouA green neon cactus waving you in from the desert dark. The harp does the neon flicker.choral pop, americana-tinged2:54
  6. 6. Lemonade Weather, Whatever the ForecastAnother heatwave song, because Bristol gives us exactly one a year. Lemonade is a legitimate coping strategy.choral pop, playful pop3:04
  7. 7. Apples for the Fiddler's HatA busker, a fountain and a hat full of apples. We recorded it live in one take, stamping on the floor.choral pop, folk hymn, gospel groove3:00
  8. 8. The Bell Rings Out for SummerThe last day of school as a full cathedral anthem. If you can hear the paper planes, we did it right.anthemic choir, nostalgic pop3:48
  9. 9. Plug In and Play It Like We Mean ItA tribute to every band that dusted off their guitars after twenty years. We borrowed their garage energy and gave it twelve voices.cinematic pop, stadium pop3:41
  10. 10. One More for the DancersThe last dance of the night, sung close and warm. The organ takes the spotlight for the final verse.operatic pop, slow dance3:38
  11. 11. The Pianist Plays Us OutThe pianist plays us out, as he has at every gig since 2009. A candlelit, sleepy closer to put the lamps down.choral pop, piano ballad2:53

Liner notes

Lift the Lamps is the record where the choir, organ and harp finally sounded like one instrument. We toured with a lamp on the organ every night and began to take the name literally. Every song is about holding a little light up for someone else, and nearly every one ends with a key change, because we can't help ourselves.
