Ruby Delacroix

A veteran club singer who has sung the last set of the night for thirty years. Every ballad sounds like a confidence, delivered close and unhurried over a sleepy room.

Played on The Late Tram with Hollis Grant

Their story

Ruby Delacroix spent decades singing closing sets in New Orleans cellar clubs before she made her first record in 2007, a hushed live-in-the-room session called 'Last Call, Low Light'. 'Paper Moon Rent' (2011) brought her a loyal following among night-shift workers and insomniacs, and 'The Third Chair' (2015) and 'Candle Down' (2019) cemented her as the voice of the final set. She now records live to tape with the same quartet, and still insists on singing the last song of every night with the house lights half down.

Influences: Smoky supper-club ballads, church-hall piano, late-night radio torch songs, French chanson phrasing

Latest from Ruby Delacroix

  • Good evening, night owls. It's Friday, and I've just started a new little record called "Half Down, Almost Home", five slow ones for the last set of the night, with the quartet and the tape rolling in one room. Thank you for keeping "Letters I Didn't Send" company on all those late shifts this week. Pour something warm, turn the lamp down low, and stay a while. I'll be right here.
