Paper Moon Rent

by Ruby Delacroix

Night-shift lullabies and letters never mailed, written for the insomniacs who found her on the radio after midnight.

Tracks

  1. 1. Spare Key Under the FlowerpotA key under a flowerpot is the most honest kind of welcome there is. I wanted the record to start by leaving the door open for you.cosy jazz, supper-club3:47
  2. 2. The Cloakroom MirrorI've fixed my hair in that mirror every night for thirty years and it has never once lied to me. It's just kind.torch song, nostalgic ballad4:31
  3. 3. Porch Swing Past TenPast ten on the porch, with the house gone dark and the swing the only thing talking. I sang it low enough to keep the neighbours asleep.porch jazz, lullaby4:08
  4. 4. The Keeper Wrote Her a LetterA lighthouse keeper writing to someone far away is every one of us at the end of a long shift. This is a letter I'd have liked to receive.storysong, parlour ballad3:41
  5. 5. Write It Down and Leave It on the SeatI wrote this one in pencil on a late bus, which is the only honest way to write a letter. The bus driver hummed along.torch song, late-night3:49
  6. 6. The Apology I Sang at Last CallThe hardest song I've sung at the end of a night, and I sang it at the end of a night. Some apologies only work when the glasses are shining and the room is empty.torch song, barroom ballad3:40
  7. 7. Fan Turning Slow, Window WideHeat in New Orleans sits on you like a coat, so we played slow enough to match it. Somebody opened a window during the take and we kept it.summer jazz, cosy jazz4:39
  8. 8. Happy for No Good ReasonSomething happened today, which is that nothing did, and I was glad of it. A little joy for the people who need a break from sorrow songs.swing, feel-good jazz3:56
  9. 9. I Should Have Called You BackI saw your name on my phone and let it ring, and I've paid for it ever since. Everyone has one call like that.torch song, modern ballad3:49
  10. 10. Second Floor, New Town, Open WindowA new town, a second-floor window and a lot of boxes. It's about starting over without feeling brave about it.hopeful ballad, supper-club3:37
  11. 11. Take Your Time, DaddyI wrote this for my own father, who holds the rail now. It's the quietest I've ever sung, and I'd like to close the record there.family ballad, church-hall piano4:05

Liner notes

After the first record, the letters started arriving, mostly from nurses, bakers, bus drivers, people awake when the rest of the city isn't. So I wrote this one for them, from the closet shelf to the last bus home. We still tracked it live, but I let a little more air in the room. The title is what I called the price of keeping a dream alive on a rented stage, and I'd pay it again.
