Borrowed Rooms

by Odalys Fern

Ten songs of strangers, empty halls and small kindnesses in places people have just left.

Tracks

  1. 1. Key in a Stranger's Palm, Porch StepsI dropped my key on the evening street and never felt it fall. A stranger found it, and the song is about that quiet luck.romantic psychedelia, dream pop3:40
  2. 2. Platform Stranger, Held My BagA stranger held my bag when my hands were full and my ticket slipped away. Small kindness, big chorus.hopeful ambient, choral pop3:23
  3. 3. Broken Watch, Hands Stopped at ThreeMy watch stopped at three in the night, and I let it stay that way for a while. The arpeggio is stuck on one bar.hushed ambient, analog arpeggio4:15
  4. 4. Empty Classroom, Chalk Dust LightThe last bell rang and the room went soft with chalk dust. I sang it like a lullaby to my old school.nostalgic psychedelia, choral folk3:44
  5. 5. Folding Chairs After the CeremonyFolding chairs empty after the ceremony and the hall wide and hushed. I recorded this one standing in that very hall.church-reverb ambient, hopeful drone4:17
  6. 6. Motel Pool, Empty Desert NightA pool light humming blue on a desert wall. The loneliest and most beautiful place I've ever sung in.desert ambient, dream pop4:00
  7. 7. Neon Vacancy, Two Hearts in Room NineA pink neon vacancy sign and two hearts in room nine. I let the synth buzz like the sign.romantic psychedelia, neon dream pop4:27
  8. 8. Bicycle at Dusk, Ticking WheelsA bicycle leaning on a garden wall at dusk, wheels ticking down. Pure ambient, barely a song.dusk ambient, tape music3:52
  9. 9. Closed Pier, Gulls Out of SeasonA pier closed for winter, gulls walking on the rail. I wanted the gulls to feel like they were part of the choir.coastal ambient, wistful dream pop3:44
  10. 10. Heat Haze, Shimmer on the RoadA road made of water where the heat comes up in waves. The warmest, hazy end to a record of cold rooms.heat-haze psychedelia, analog synth3:49

Liner notes

I wanted to write about rooms right after the people leave: classrooms, ceremony halls, motel pools, quiet piers. Strangers show up in them too, handing back keys and holding bags. I recorded most of this in a rented church hall, so the reverb you hear is real, and the harmonies are all me, as ever.
