Open Window Sessions

by Cassio Lune

Dusty jazz loops cut after midnight in a grandmother's spare room, window open to the Lisbon rain.

Tracks

  1. 1. Antenna Rain on the RoofThe first loop I ever finished, built on a crackling guitar sample while rain tapped the roof. It set the tone for everything after.lo-fi hip hop, jazz sample3:58
  2. 2. Cassette in the GloveboxI found a tape in a glovebox and slowed it down until it sounded like a memory. The hiss is part of the melody.tape saturation, dreamy beats3:37
  3. 3. Request Line, Quiet HoursI wrote this thinking about late-night radio and the one person who calls in at half past three. The drums are soft so the phone light can do the talking.late-night radio, boom-bap3:23
  4. 4. All-Night Bookshop, Back TableA lamp-lit loop for the bookshop that never locks its door. I chopped a bossa guitar into something lazier.bossa loop, jazzhop3:00
  5. 5. Pier at Four, Lines in the DarkThermos, two lines, nobody around. I wanted the drums to move like a float on still water.jazzhop, mellow beats3:04
  6. 6. Night Nurse Walking HomeFor everyone who walks home after a twelve-hour shift. The keys drag a little on purpose, like tired feet.downtempo, soulful beats3:37
  7. 7. Snow Plough, Three A.M. OrangeI watched snow ploughs from the window and the orange light on the hill stayed with me. This is the sound of a white town at three in the morning.winter beats, jazzhop3:26
  8. 8. Clockmaker's Workshop, Slow TickI sampled a ticking clock and let the tiny screws set the rhythm. It's the most patient beat I've made.lo-fi hip hop, sample collage3:19
  9. 9. Street Sweeper, First Grey LightThe street sweeper's brushes turned into a hi-hat, and the first grey light turned into a chord. I always want to finish a night on a hopeful note.sunrise beats, jazzhop3:03
  10. 10. Taxi Rank, Four in the MorningA row of taxis idling, meters off. I leaned on a lazy bass line and let the tape wobble.lo-fi, night jazz3:49
  11. 11. Milk Float Before SunriseThe quietest motor in the whole city. I kept everything hushed so the street could keep sleeping.ambient beats, tape-saturated soul3:24
  12. 12. Umbrella Stand, Lost and FoundI closed the first record with a lobby full of forgotten umbrellas. It feels like something waiting patiently for someone to come back.soulful beats, jazzhop3:15

Liner notes

I made these in my grandmother's spare room in Lisbon, always after midnight, always with the window open so the street could get onto the tape. I had a cheap sampler, a pile of warped jazz records and no plan beyond keeping the loops warm. Nobody was meant to hear them, so they ended up honest. If you hear rain or a wire humming, that's the room, not an effect.
