Forged in Rust

by Iron Marrow

Four friends, one rented garage and a closed mill: raw rust-belt riffs and the first slow ballad.

Tracks

  1. 1. Forged in the Foundry LightThis is the one we open every show with, the first riff we ever agreed on. It sounds like clocking in at six with sparks in your hair.heavy metal, anthemic metal4:55
  2. 2. Chrome Teeth and ThunderWe wrote this the week the gates were chained shut. It is angry, loud and a little proud.blues rock, rust-belt rock4:37
  3. 3. Dial Tone ThunderA payphone in the rain and a pocket full of coins, and a riff that drops like them down the drain. Fast and rough on purpose.speed metal, heavy metal3:52
  4. 4. Ash on the Welcome MatWritten after a landlord told us to turn down. We did not.heavy metal, thrash-leaning metal4:07
  5. 5. Thunder on the PavementThe street was our first stage and a cold stone corner was our first PA. It is the twin-guitar harmony we practised most.twin-guitar metal, heavy metal4:19
  6. 6. Closing Time at the Hawker StallsA night market tune we wrote after a long drive, full of steam and lantern light. The harmonised lead is our favourite thing on the record.heavy metal, melodic metal3:52
  7. 7. Room Nine, No VacancyNeon buzzing over an empty motel lot, written at three in the morning on tour in a borrowed van. Driving but sad.road metal, doom-tinged metal4:55
  8. 8. Keeper of the LampA lighthouse keeper alone on ninety-nine steps. We dragged the tempo down and let the guitars howl like wind.doom metal, gothic metal4:21
  9. 9. Steel Toe LullabyMy father's boots by the kitchen door. This is the slow, heavy ballad we write for every record, and it started here.power ballad, doom metal4:58
  10. 10. Porch Light Left OnTen years on the road in a rusted van and a light left on at home. We closed the record with it because it felt like an ending we could be proud of.power ballad, heartland metal5:44

Liner notes

We recorded this in the garage with the door half open so the shift-whistle from across the river leaked onto the tape, and we left it in. Nobody had a budget, only amps and time, and the mill had given us plenty of the second. Dubbed copies went hand to hand before anyone printed a sleeve, and every hiss on them is ours. The ballad at the end of the record was a dare to ourselves to play something soft and mean it.
