Neon Rearview

by Kilo Meridian

The first sung hooks: wistful, reverb-soaked tenor over rainy streets, bus stops and empty night roads.

Tracks

  1. 1. Sixty Seconds at the DoorThe first line I ever sang on a record. I wanted a nervous little hallway at the start, with the hand on the handle.dream pop, synthpop3:35
  2. 2. Bicycle Bell, Empty StreetRiding home on a quiet night with the wheels humming. It's the happiest I sound on this record, so I put it early.bright synthwave, romantic pop4:33
  3. 3. Typhoon Night, Stay InsideI wrote it while a storm shook the windows. The drum machine is soft because the sound outside was loud enough.rainy electronica, tender synth4:15
  4. 4. Night Shift, Soft ShoesThree in the morning on a hospital corridor, or a hotel, I never decided. Soft shoes and a long pad.nocturnal synth, dream pop3:13
  5. 5. Fog on the Harbour RoadHeadlights barely show, so the melody barely shows either. I like songs that make you lean forward.foggy synthwave, romantic synth3:56
  6. 6. Room Under the UmbrellaA bus stop, one umbrella, and the cheesiest chorus I have ever written. I'm not sorry.synthpop, playful pop3:45
  7. 7. Postbox on the HillA tiny red box on a hill, worn paint and all. I tried to make hope sound like something you post in the morning.hopeful electronica, chillwave3:23
  8. 8. Drive-In, Last ReelThis is the single and the one people kept sending me clips of. Gravel, headlights, and a screen going white.anthemic synthwave, cinematic pop4:19
  9. 9. Sunrise Over the Service StationCoffee in a paper cup and pink light on the road. It has the most groove I've ever managed on a Tuesday.smooth synth, groovy synthwave4:15
  10. 10. Voicemail I Never DeletedA ten-second message I never deleted. I whispered the verses because shouting felt wrong.tender electronica, dream pop4:06
  11. 11. Arcade Lights, Out of SeasonA shut pier in the off season, lit up for nobody. The melancholy here is bright on purpose.coastal synth, arcade ambient4:06
  12. 12. Kite on the Evening WindThe closer is about me and my dad and a kite on a windy hill. I wanted the record to end on a long evening light.nostalgic synthwave, dream pop3:03

Liner notes

For two years I hid behind the synth. On this record I finally stepped up to the microphone, in a parked car by the sea, because that was the only place the room sounded right. My voice is small and a bit shaky, so I drowned it in reverb and hoped for the best. It turns out people like a hook they can hum in the dark.
