Coast Road Zero

by Kilo Meridian

Instrumental-leaning night-drive record that spread through late-night playlists: gym halls, record shops and harbour roads.

Tracks

  1. 1. Last Ferry HomeThe opener, because it sounds like the engine turning over. Big bright chords and a skyline that never quite arrives.anthemic synthwave, night drive3:45
  2. 2. Gym Lights Coming OnA song about the last song at a school dance and the lights coming up. I wrote it on a Sunday and played the pads very slowly.nostalgic synth, dream pop3:49
  3. 3. Boardwalk in NovemberOut-of-season seaside towns are my favourite places to write. The drum machine here sounds like rain on a boarded-up kiosk.coastal ambient, chillwave4:16
  4. 4. Needle Drop, SaturdayA bouncy little tune about digging through crates. The bassline is the sound of flicking through sleeves.retro funk, arcade pop3:33
  5. 5. Kitchen Radio, LowMy mum always had the radio on low by the sink, and this is the sound of that kitchen. Warm and slightly sad.warm electronica, ambient pop4:06
  6. 6. Soap and Neon, Slow WashA romantic car wash scene for a film that doesn't exist. The brushes are the percussion.dream synth, cinematic3:40
  7. 7. Back Seat, Neon RainThis is the single. The neon on a wet road is my favourite image, and the chorus is basically that image set to a drum machine.synthpop, night drive3:09
  8. 8. Recipe in Her HandwritingAn old recipe card in a faded tin, with her curly handwriting. I tried to make the synth sound like flour in the air.tender electronica, bedroom pop3:35
  9. 9. Empty Hall, Folding ChairsStacked chairs in a quiet hall, and a lot of reverb. I imagined the last person leaving and turning off the lights.ambient, dream synth3:14
  10. 10. Side A, Made for YouI closed the record with a mixtape, because that's how I used to say things I couldn't say out loud. Pen, lamp, record button.romantic synthwave, lo-fi3:46

Liner notes

I self-released this one from my kitchen table and did not expect anyone to find it. People started sending me photos of their dashboards at night, and that's when I understood what I'd made. Every track is a place you drive past rather than stop at. I kept the arrangements sparse so there'd be room for the sea.
