Sleepless Hours

by Cassio Lune

The first record with his own voice, hushed and close to the mic, for people who are still awake.

Tracks

  1. 1. Kettle on the Back BurnerThe first song where I sing the opening line myself. I kept it low and gold, like a kitchen light at 2 a.m.bedroom soul, lo-fi3:03
  2. 2. Midnight Bakery Van, Warm CratesCrates of bread still warm, and a vocal that sounds like it's whispering over them. I had no idea then that I'd end up living above a bakery.warm chillhop, bedroom soul3:19
  3. 3. Subway Busker, Last ChordA busker's last chord echoing down a tunnel. I recorded the guitar under a blanket to get that muffled platform sound.lo-fi soul, bossa loop3:20
  4. 4. Hotel Lobby Piano, Keys at RestKeys at rest, guests gone upstairs. I played the piano part slowly enough that the pauses did half the work.jazzy chillhop, piano beats2:54
  5. 5. Sewing Room, One Lamp OnOne lamp, one length of thread, one very soft vocal. It's a song about patience.lo-fi, tape-saturated soul3:07
  6. 6. Last-Lit Kiosk, Newspaper RainI sat in the rain by a kiosk and wrote this on the back of a receipt. The newspaper drums are me tapping a magazine.rainy chillhop, jazzhop3:13
  7. 7. Late Tram Conductor, Punched TicketsDing of the bell and a vocal as tired as the passengers. I wanted it to sound like the last tram home.nostalgic lo-fi, soulful beats2:48
  8. 8. Pharmacy Bike, Rain DeliveryA small white bag in a basket, rain on the handlebars. I'm tender about people who deliver things at night.tender chillhop, bedroom soul3:46
  9. 9. Print Shop, Fresh Ink at DawnRollers turning, ink still wet. I added a little drum-machine shuffle that sounds like the press.sunrise lo-fi, boom-bap3:27
  10. 10. Night Bus Driver's ThermosSteam curling off a thermos on a dashboard. I sang this one almost entirely on the exhale.cosy chillhop, bedroom soul3:12
  11. 11. Canteen Hatch, Late SoupA ladle of soup and a place to sit. It's the warmest hook I've written, and I kept the beat small so it wouldn't spill.warm lo-fi, soul sample2:59
  12. 12. Vending Café, Quarter Past ThreeA hot drink from a stall that never closes. I wanted the record to end the way a sleepless night does, quietly and a little hopeful.lo-fi, late-night soul3:04

Liner notes

For three years I hid behind samples. On this one I finally leaned in and sang, very quietly, because the house was asleep and my grandmother's wall is thin. The voice is barely above a whisper and I left the breaths in. These are songs about kitchens, kiosks and night buses, all the places where sleepless people end up.
