Their story
The Lantern Hounds formed in 2013 when four friends from Asheville packed a borrowed van and played for gas money. Their self-released debut Sparks on the Blue Ridge (2014) found a following at festivals, and Borrowed Time (2017) brought their anthemic gang-vocal choruses to a wider audience. Their 2021 album State Line Hymnal cemented them as a dependable live band. They still write together in the van between shows.
The band
- Cal Whitaker lead vocals, twelve-string guitar
- Nell Prewitt piano, backing vocals
- Benji Ocampo harmonica, bass
- Tuck Halloran drums, gang vocals
Influences: Campfire singalongs, 60s jangle-pop, Appalachian harmony traditions, bar-band heartland anthems
Latest from The Lantern Hounds
- Halloween weekend, and the van smells like coffee and old setlists. We're starting a new EP called Gas Station Constellations: five songs about midnight pumps, long drives home, and the friends who stay up with you. Nell found a piano line at a rest stop, Benji says the harmonica is feeling dramatic, and Tuck won't stop humming a gang chorus. Thanks for spinning "Apology Tour of the Interstate." Sing loud, y'all! - Cal, Nell, Benji & Tuck
