Soft Focus Weather

by Moth Static

The drum machine and synth pads arrive, and the night-time observations get a soft, hazy glow.

Tracks

  1. 1. Ward Lamp, Low and AmberA hospital ward lamp, low and amber. This is the first song where the drum machine comes in, and it's barely louder than a heartbeat.dream pop, synth ambient3:08
  2. 2. Night Laundry Chute, Warm TowelsThe dryers hum a lullaby, so we let them. Tomas ran the tape through a real tumble dryer drum for the echo, and I wouldn't recommend it.lo-fi, bedroom pop4:07
  3. 3. Clock Tower, Midnight Strikes SlowSlow chimes and pad swells, with one drum machine hit every four bars. We wanted it to feel like the hour itself was stretching out.slowcore, synth ambient3:35
  4. 4. Radio Dial, Amber NumbersAll those amber numbers on the old dial, and the half-heard stations in between. I tuned our radio to static for the intro.dream pop, nostalgic pop3:28
  5. 5. Ice Machine, Hallway HumA hotel hallway at 2am has its own kind of music. This is my attempt at writing it down.ambient pop, shoegaze3:33
  6. 6. Snow Globe Shelf, Slow FlurryA tiny town in a glass ball, snowing forever. The pad here is just one note held very, very long.synth ambient, dream pop3:59
  7. 7. Lantern Boat, River FishingA lantern on the river, nothing else for miles. I sang this one lying on the floor.slowcore, bedroom pop3:11
  8. 8. Lost Property Trolley, Platform NineThe trolley that collects forgotten umbrellas and scarves after the last train. It's a kind of love song to everything left behind.dream pop, shoegaze3:32
  9. 9. Windmill at Midnight, Slow SailsSlow sails turning over dark fields, with a drum machine ticking like a clock. Imogen's pad does most of the work.synth ambient, shoegaze3:21
  10. 10. Bookmobile, Last Stop Under the StarsThe closer: a little van of stories parked under the stars. We wanted to end the record with something that feels like closing a book.dream pop, bedroom pop3:12

Liner notes

This is where the sound really arrived. Imogen bought a secondhand drum machine with a dodgy button and a pad synth from an ad in a corner shop window, and suddenly the songs had a floor to stand on. I still sing close to the mic like I'm telling you a secret, but now there's a warm fog under everything. We called it Soft Focus Weather because that's how the city looked from the flat window all that winter.
